It All Started with a Little Card

After years of being called “ma’am” by well-meaning service providers, Shelley came up with the idea of leaving a “Tip Card,” along with the usual monetary tip, to educate wait staff and other customer-facing personnel. “These people weren’t trying to be offensive,” says Shelley, “they just didn’t know any better. So I set out to help them understand, in a friendly, non-threatening way, how gender diverse people want to be addressed.”
